Trial of Magistrates and Customs Officers: Verdict Expected on February 24 in Koup©la

Koup©la: The correctional chamber of the High Court (TGI) of Koup©la is set to deliver its verdict on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in a high-profile case involving magistrates and other defendants accused of corruption, money laundering, and extortion in the "Niki¨ma Zindi D©sir© and twelve other customs officers" case.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this case originated from proceedings initiated against Niki¨ma Zindi D©sir© and twelve customs agents, who were prosecuted by the public prosecutor for acts of extortion. Among the magistrates involved are an investigating judge, a public prosecutor, and a presiding judge, suspected of receiving undue benefits to issue a dismissal, which was upheld on appeal, favoring the customs officers accused of bribery.

The prosecution has requested prison sentences ranging from 24 months to 5 years, along with fines, arguing that the alleged facts were sufficiently established and compromised the integrity and proper functioning of justice. Meanwhile, the defense has at times contested the accusations and at other times pleaded for leniency, noting that the defendants are first-time offenders.

Furthermore, the state's legal agent has claimed a sum of 1 billion 200 million for financial damages incurred by the state. After over two weeks of deliberations, the court adjourned the case, scheduling the verdict for February 24th. The forthcoming decision is highly anticipated and should clarify accountability in this sensitive case, which has garnered significant public attention. The verdict is expected to be announced in the morning at the Koup©la courthouse.
