Two-Year-Old Child Drowns in Abandoned Pit in Gay©ri

Gay©ri: A child aged approximately two years old lost their life by drowning in an abandoned pit in sector 4 of Gay©ri, following heavy rain recorded on the morning of June 13, 2026, AIB observed.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the victim fell into a pit filled with rainwater. This excavation had been carried out several years ago as part of a project to install a gas station that was ultimately never realized. Since then, the pit had remained open, without backfilling or any protective measures to prevent accidents. Heavy rainfall has contributed to its filling, transforming the site into a veritable death trap for local residents, especially children.

The victim, one of a pair of twins, was found dead. The tragedy has plunged his family into deep grief and sparked strong emotions within the neighborhood. Residents of the area have expressed concern about the presence of abandoned infrastructure that could pose dangers, particularly during this winter period when rainwater quickly fills unsecured excavations.

This tragic event has brought back to the forefront the issue of securing unfinished construction sites and abandoned pits. The local population is calling on the relevant authorities and the owners of the sites concerned to take the necessary measures to identify, secure, or fill in these structures in order to prevent further loss of life. As the peak of the rainy season approaches, parental vigilance and securing at-risk areas appear to be imperative to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
