Italy: The Wôkankoke Association of Brescia, ambassador of Burkinabe culture and model of patriotic solidarity
For nearly two decades, the Wôkankoke Association of Brescia, Italy, has proudly represented Burkina Faso through solidarity initiatives, cultural promotion, and development projects benefiting Burkinabè communities. A true link between the diaspora and the homeland, this organization is now considered one of the most dynamic Burkinabè associations in Italy.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Wôkankoke Association was created in 2006 and means “We are together” in the Bissa language. It brings together Burkinabè nationals originating mainly from Boulgou and other localities in the country. The association unites its members beyond religious, social, or generational affiliations, fostering a spirit of brotherhood.
Members of Wôkankoke have expressed that the association is largely a family, emphasizing solidarity, mutual support, and love for Burkina Faso. Over the years, the organization
has distinguished itself through numerous social achievements in Burkina Faso, including financing the drilling of boreholes in several localities and supporting various community initiatives aimed at improving living conditions.
Recently, the association answered the call from the Burkinabe authorities by supporting the presidential initiative Faso Mêbo. It donated several tons of cement and contributed to the development efforts undertaken in the country. Harouna Guené, the association’s president, emphasized that geographical distance cannot diminish their deep attachment to their nation.
The association also plays a significant role in preserving and promoting Burkinabè culture in Italy. Its annual festival has become a major cultural event for the Burkinabè diaspora in Italy, showcasing the cultural riches of Burkina Faso to a wide audience while transmitting values, traditions, and identity to younger generations.
Traditional dances, local cuisine, clothing, music, and customs are central to this cul
tural celebration. Leaders of the association aim to keep alive the link between their children and their country of origin, ensuring that even those born far from Burkina Faso know their history, traditions, and roots.
The positive image of Burkinabe people in Italy is also highlighted by the association’s vice-president, Moumouni Songné, who noted that Burkinabe workers are appreciated for their seriousness and sense of duty. With a forward-looking vision, the Wôkankoke Association plans to continue its solidarity actions, support development initiatives in Burkina Faso, and promote Burkinabè cultural values to future generations.
Thousands of kilometers from their homeland, the members of Wôkankoke demonstrate that love of country knows no borders and that the diaspora is a major player in the development of Burkina Faso.
