Ouagadougou: Torrential rain that fell on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, 2026, in the town of Gourcy claimed the life of a child, swept away by floodwaters on the Basnam road. His body was recovered this Thursday from the Guelba dam, AIB observed.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the children's uncle was bringing his three nephews back by motorcycle from the family field, located near the village of Basnam, a few kilometers from Gourcy. Rain had just fallen on the region. While crossing the flooded road at the entrance to the town, the driver fell into a crevasse carved by the current, which was particularly strong at that spot.
The driver and two of the children managed to cling to tree roots exposed by erosion and survived. The third child, however, was swept away by the floodwaters. Local residents immediately mobilized to search for him. It wasn't until Thursday morning that the body of the little boy, less than three years old, was found floating on the bank of the Guelba dam.
After the usual procedures, a ritual was organized to appease the water spirits, before the burial of the young victim. On site, citizens deplored the state of the Basnam road, deemed impassable despite several repairs carried out by local civil society.
