Gayeri: The celebration of Customs and Traditions Day took place in Gayeri, marking a significant revival of ancestral values, as expressed by the traditional chief of Gayeri, Baaloba. The event, held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, was graced by the presence of administrative, customary, religious, and military authorities.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the celebration saw participation from various ethnic and religious communities residing in Gayeri. Traditional Chief Baaloba emphasized the importance of the day as a resurrection of lost or hidden ancestral values, allowing custodians of traditions and customs to impart their wisdom to interested individuals. The event also served as a platform for cultural exchanges and the sharing of traditional secrets.
The celebration included exhibitions of traditional items from the Gourmantche, Bellas, Peulhs, and Mossi communities, along with parades held at the Gayeri A school. Attendees witnessed demonstrations of traditional skills, such as spinning, millet crushing on millstones, and cotton ginning using traditional tools.
Male participants presented herbal tea barks and demonstrated ancestral fire-lighting techniques using flint, iron, and kapok cotton. Ethnic groups paraded in traditional costumes and showcased traditional dishes, highlighting the cultural richness of the region.
Diagoundo Lompo, the younger brother of His Majesty Laabidiero of Gayeri, noted that the event restores value to tradition and its practitioners. He emphasized that the celebration manifests true identity and allows children to witness historical practices firsthand, which they previously only learned about from history books or stories.
Lompo also urged traditionalists to refrain from commercializing customs and traditions. He highlighted the day as a moment of social cohesion, given the diverse ethnic groups present, reinforcing the importance of preserving and valuing ancestral traditions and customs.
