Barga: Customary chiefs of the commune of Barga in the province of Yatenga have expressed their approval of the newly adopted law on customary and traditional chieftaincy by the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT). According to the chiefs, the law addresses critical issues regarding the roles and responsibilities of traditional leaders.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Naaba Koom of Barga emphasized the importance of the law in maintaining the integrity of chieftaincy roles. He stated that chiefs should choose between political engagement and upholding the traditional values of their territories. Naaba Koom highlighted that chiefs are pivotal in fostering social cohesion, and political affiliations can undermine the trust of their subjects. He expressed gratitude to the current authorities for their vision in restoring the dignity of customary and traditional chiefs.
Naaba Wandga of Dinguiri expressed satisfaction with the law, noting that it remedies the issue of chiefs losing respect by engaging in politics. He pointed out that the impartiality of chiefs in conflict resolution within communities had been compromised by political involvement. The new law ensures that those aspiring to political roles can no longer serve as chiefs. He urged all chiefs responsible for installing other chiefs to adhere to this law to sustain social harmony.
Naaba Saaga of Ramdolla praised the law for allowing citizens to choose between being a politician or a traditional chief. He thanked the authorities for their commitment to promoting traditional heritage. Naaba Saaga noted that neutral traditional chiefs contribute to more effective governance, while securing ritual sites aids in preventing land disputes and ensures peace in villages.
