Burkina Faso: CERFI Initiates a Public Conference on Divergences and Convergences to Strengthen Social Cohesion

Ouagadougou: The Center for Islamic Studies, Research and Training (CERFI), through its Kadiogo regional office, organized a public conference on Sunday under the theme "Islam and Traditions." The objective was to discuss the differences and points of agreement within the community in order to promote peace and social cohesion in Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Boureima Zalle, the regional coordinator of CERFI/Kadiogo, emphasized the importance of establishing a clear and constructive debate so that everyone can better understand each other. He noted that misunderstanding often hinders harmonious living, but commonalities outweigh divisions. Zalle highlighted that Muslims and adherents of other faiths share the same Burkinab¨ culture and traditions.

Zalle further explained that discussions help identify both divergences and convergences, which in turn strengthens social cohesion. The conference was held in all 13 regions of the country and aimed to provide participants with a fair understanding of Islamic teachings about traditions and how to approach those of different faiths.

Zalle stressed the need for coexistence, remarking that the Creator made individuals different and no one has the right to impose their worldview on others. He pointed out that a better understanding of Islam can ease tensions, as many offensive remarks on social media stem from ignorance. Initiatives like this conference, he stated, contribute to strengthening social cohesion in Burkina Faso.

Imam Marboulaye Nombre, the speaker, conveyed that CERFI aims to deliver a message to both Muslims and Christians. He mentioned that online debates often question the compatibility of being both Muslim and African. Nombre explained that Burkinab¨ people are deeply connected, with families often comprising Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, and traditionalists-a characteristic feature of Burkina Faso.

Imam Nombre concluded by expressing pride in their traditions and in being both Muslims and Burkinab¨.
