Public Conference in Dori Explores Interactions Between Islam and Traditions to Foster Social Cohesion

Dori: The regional coordination of the Circle of Islamic Studies, Research and Training (CERFI) of Liptako organized a public conference on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in Dori, focusing on the theme 'Islam and Traditions.' The conference aimed at strengthening social cohesion within communities by exploring the relationship between the Muslim religion and traditional practices in Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Ibrahim Gnamou, the regional coordinator of CERFI Liptako, highlighted that the theme was deliberately chosen due to the daily interactions between Islam and deeply rooted traditions, which can sometimes be harmonious or cause misunderstandings. This initiative seeks to provide clarity to support national unity and communal living.

Mr. Gnamou emphasized that the conference's goal was to identify both convergences and divergences between Islam and traditions, with a focus on common values that can enhance social cohesion. He urged young people, religious leaders, and all participants to act as peacemakers within their communities.

The day's speaker, Inoussa Diallo, utilized Quranic verses and hadiths to explain the foundations of Islam in relation to traditions. He identified shared values such as solidarity, fraternity, justice, and love for one's neighbor, which he believes are crucial for maintaining social harmony.

Comrade Sy Dramane Traore, representing the sponsor, commented on the timeliness of the conference. He observed that the interaction between religious practices and cultural traditions is a recurring issue in communities with strong cultural ties. Mr. Traore applauded the CERFI initiative for facilitating calm and inclusive dialogue and expressed the sponsor's commitment to supporting similar efforts.

Concluding the discussions, participants voiced their desire for more such gatherings, recognizing them as vital platforms for raising awareness and promoting peace, social cohesion, and communal living.
