Zondoma: On the occasion of the celebration of the Day of Customs and Traditions (JCT), held on Friday, May 15, 2026, within the grounds of the Royal Palace, His Majesty Naaba Baongo, Chief of Gourcy, officially launched a competition called "Who am I". Aimed at students from K©ogo, known as "banko©ss©" in the Moor© language, this competition seeks to promote self-knowledge through their origins and the transmission of ancestral values. As the saying goes, "You have to know where you come from to better find your way in life." Specifically, each participant will conduct research to determine their family name and its deeper meaning, the family's taboos and values, and, most importantly, to trace as many of their ancestors as possible (genealogy).
According to Burkina Information Agency, a member of the K©ogo steering committee, a jury will be formed to select the winners during the next student gathering scheduled for the end of June. "The candidates will take turns speaking on the K©ogo terrace to address the audience, who will be invited for this purpose," he stated, adding that the best will receive prizes.
This first edition of the "Who am I?" competition, according to comrade Ou©draogo, is part of the Chief of Gourcy's desire to make the day of customs and traditions a strong moment for reclaiming cultural identity and consolidating living together.
As a reminder, K©ogo opened its doors in Gourcy last February and has 80 students enrolled, including 60 in primary school and 20 in post-primary school. Its main mission is to transmit indigenous cultural values, the foundations of sustainable development and social cohesion, to younger generations.
