WAEMU Council of Ministers Approves New Veterinary Products Marketing Framework

Ouagadougou: The second ordinary session of the Council of Ministers of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) concluded in Ouagadougou with the adoption of several significant decisions, including a new framework for marketing veterinary products within the community.According to Burkina Information Agency, the session, chaired by Burkina Faso's Minister of Economy and Finance, Aboubakar Nacanabo, saw ministers from WAEMU member states discuss strategies to strengthen the Union's financing, financial stability, and economic integration. A key outcome was the adoption of a regulation aimed at enhancing oversight of veterinary product marketing, which Mr. Nacanabo emphasized would benefit the community.Furthermore, the Council approved the 2026 budget for the Financial Markets Authority of the West African Monetary Union (AMF-UMOA) and extended the mandate of its board members. The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) also received approval for an operational text related to the Financ ial Stability Fund, designed to support member states in financial distress.In addition to these measures, the Council recommended significant reforms to the AMF-UMOA to enhance the regional financial market's capability to support state financing. The West African Development Bank (BOAD) was authorized to pursue new partnerships to bolster the Union's development project financing.Chairman of the Council of Ministers highlighted that the decisions made during the session would help consolidate WAEMU's economic achievements and address development financing challenges. He noted the Union's robust economic indicators, including a 6% growth rate, controlled inflation, and solid foreign exchange reserves.Minister Nacanabo expressed optimism about WAEMU's future, emphasizing the diversity of its member states as a strength and calling for collective efforts to build a stronger union. He concluded by urging confidence and solidarity amidst global uncertainties and economic challenges, reaffirming the goal of transforming WAEMU into a formidable economic entity.
