Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Basic Education, Promotion of National Languages, and Literacy (MEBAPLN) has reached 63.08% completion of its performance contract objectives as of June 30, 2026. This update was shared by Minister Jacques Sosth¨ne Dingara following a mid-term evaluation conducted by the Prime Minister on Friday, July 24, 2026.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the evaluation allowed Minister Dingara to present the actions executed in the first half of 2026, in line with the government’s policy on basic education. Minister Dingara highlighted the continuation of reforms initiated two years earlier, notably the pilot program for teaching in national languages. Approximately 900 first-grade classes have started lessons in students’ native languages, marking the bilingual/multilingual pilot phase’s progress.
Minister Dingara announced plans to expand this practice in the upcoming school year, facilitating education in children’s mother tongues. This move aligns with the recognition of national languages as official languages. Furthermore, the ministry has explored teaching indigenous knowledge, creating a regional directory to assist teachers in conveying this knowledge to students with the help of local resource persons.
In terms of school governance, the minister reviewed the first year of implementing school councils, replacing previous structures like APE, AME, and COGES. He clarified that this change signifies a new dynamic, fostering shared responsibility between schools and communities.
Addressing the 1,000 FCFA contribution from parents, Minister Dingara emphasized its equitable nature, allowing contributions based on individual means. The first semester featured an artistic and cultural month, aimed at integrating schools with their environments and promoting national values among students.
On academic performance, Minister Dingara commended the 2026 Certificate of Primary Education results, with a 95.23% pass rate. He noted that over 60% of CM2 classes achieved a 100% pass rate, and 43 Basic Education Centers also reported a 100% success rate.
Looking ahead, the MEBAPLN plans to implement pilot inclusion phases, enforce school fee regulations, and publish primary school classifications by category by the end of July or early August. The ministry is also considering measures to enhance textbook availability.
