Ouagadougou: The Banfora Detention and Correctional Center (MAC-BFR) has initiated a series of activities to commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day, also known as “Prisoner’s Day,” beginning on Thursday, July 16, 2026. These activities are being held under the patronage of the Governor of the Tannounyan Region, focusing on promoting the rights and social reintegration of prisoners over a 72-hour period.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event honors Nelson Mandela, a pivotal figure in human rights advocacy, and serves as a platform for dialogue among stakeholders dedicated to improving prison conditions. Dialinli Yonli, the director of MAC-BFR, highlighted that Banfora prison, one of the country’s largest, faces significant overcrowding issues. More than 85% of its inmates are young individuals under 40, a demographic that holds potential for contributing to national food self-sufficiency goals.
The theme for this year’s event is “Contribution of agricultural penitentiary centers to the vocational training of prisoners and to the achievement of food self-sufficiency: challenges and perspectives.” This theme aligns with the prison’s efforts to enhance agricultural activities, supported by organizations such as SOSUCO and INERA. During the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign, the prison cultivated 35 hectares, producing 19 tonnes of cereals and involving over a hundred inmates, ranking MAC-BFR second nationally in prison agricultural production.
The Governor of the Tannounyan region, who attended as a patron of the event, emphasized the importance of the day, established by the United Nations to honor Nelson Mandela’s lifelong dedication to peace, democracy, and human rights. He reiterated that prisoners are integral members of society and deserve humane detention conditions.
The Governor urged stakeholders to increase support for prison facilities and assist prisoners in their reintegration process. Responding to concerns from MAC-BFR officials, he pledged to fund the drilling of a well to enhance water access within the facility.
The planned activities include a clean-up day, awareness sessions on social reintegration, a panel conference on the national theme, along with sporting, cultural, and artistic events. The celebration will culminate in a community meal involving inmates, authorities, and partners.
Through this initiative, the Banfora Detention and Correctional Facility aims to foster solidarity with those deprived of their liberty and promote reintegration as a critical element of social cohesion and development.
