Ouagadougou: Minister of Health Robert Lucien Kargougou has emphasized his commitment to ensuring access to quality, person-centered health services and strengthening pharmaceutical sovereignty in Burkina Faso. During the second ordinary session of the 2026 Sectoral Dialogue Framework for Health, Kargougou celebrated the achievements in infrastructure, pharmaceutical sovereignty, and patient care.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the session, held in Ouagadougou, focused on reviewing the sector's performance and setting priorities for the remainder of the year. Kargougou highlighted the recent validation of the National Health Development Strategy 2026-2030, which aims to guide health interventions over the next five years. He also acknowledged the progress in clearing the social liabilities of the Primary Health Care Management Agency, with significant financial commitments made.
The minister lauded the success of two kidney transplants performed by local medical teams, underscoring advancements in specialized care. In the fight against cancer, the Central Purchasing Agency for Essential Generic Medicines and Medical Consumables has achieved a 78% rate in making anticancer drugs available, enhancing patient access to necessary treatments.
The inauguration of 71 healthcare facilities in Banfora on June 20, 2026, was another significant milestone, benefiting over 150,000 people and marking the commissioning of new hemodialysis centers across several regions. Kargougou also reported on the progress of major structural projects, including the Gaoua Regional University Hospital and the center for traditional medicine, which are nearing completion.
Efforts in human resource development were highlighted, with the training of 869 specialist doctors and the organization of the first Health Financing Forum. Despite these accomplishments, Kargougou acknowledged ongoing challenges such as construction delays and low disbursement rates due to bureaucratic issues.
For the remainder of 2026, the minister urged a focus on accelerating investments to meet set objectives, emphasizing the importance of rigorous work and open communication among stakeholders to enhance the health system's performance. The Sectoral Dialogue Framework for Health aims to bring together key actors to assess progress, address constraints, and improve public health policy implementation in Burkina Faso.
The health sector's initiatives are primarily supported by Pillar 3 of the RECOVERY plan, "Developing human capital," with an emphasis on health and nutrition programs.
