Ouagadougou: The Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB), Kourittenga section, conducted an awareness day at the great mosque of Pouytenga to educate the Muslim community about the new law on religious freedom. This event, held on August 10, 2026, aimed to help Muslims in the commune understand the law's main provisions and their responsibilities in practicing their faith.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the law, which took effect on June 20, 2026, regulates religious freedom in Burkina Faso. The awareness day was intended to help participants grasp the law's core elements, including the rights and duties of religious actors. Ousmane Tiendrbogo, deputy prosecutor of Faso at the High Court of Koupla, explained the law's provisions, highlighting the importance of respecting the legal framework for religious freedom.
The discussions focused on defining concepts such as secularism, preaching, hate speech, extremism, and radicalism. Tiendrbogo also covered the obligations of religious associations and preachers, the financing of religious activities, and the penalties for non-compliance. He noted the strong interest shown by the attendees, which he believes will lead to positive changes in behavior and discourse among religious communities.
Tiendrbogo addressed additional topics related to freedom of worship, respect for other faiths, social cohesion, and the prevention of community tensions by religious leaders. Issa Compaor, president of the FAIB, Kourittenga section, emphasized the initiative's goal to aid Muslim communities in understanding the new legal framework. He noted the large turnout of imams, preachers, and religious leaders who are key to disseminating this knowledge.
Imam Mahamadou Bachir Br expressed the significance of the campaign, acknowledging that it clarified many previously misunderstood provisions. He urged those who missed the event to seek information from attendees and encouraged sharing the event's communications through WhatsApp groups for broader community awareness.
