Douna:In the commune of Douna, approximately ten kilometers from Sindou in the province of Lraba, significant progress has been made in agriculture and community resilience during the fourth year of the Popular Progressive Revolution (RPP). A key development is the establishment of an irrigated area covering 600 hectares.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this development includes the creation of 2,340 plots for 1,400 farmers. The infrastructure comprises 4 km of primary canal, 12 km of secondary canals, and 6 km of tertiary canals, alongside 18 km of protective dikes and 42 km of access roads. Storage facilities have also been constructed to support agricultural activities.
The newly developed area is expected to yield a significant production capacity. Forecasts indicate that the perimeter could facilitate the production of 3,153 tonnes of rice during both the wet and dry seasons, along with 1,051 tonnes of wheat during the dry season. This results in an estimated annual production potential of approximately 7,357 tonnes.
These advancements are part of a broader effort to enhance agricultural production and food security through improved land development and crop intensification. They also align with initiatives to bolster local authorities' roles in fostering production, social cohesion, and community resilience against security and economic challenges.
Looking ahead, plans focus on further developing the 600-hectare irrigated area, supporting farmers, and enhancing agricultural productivity. Additionally, efforts will be made to improve access to equipment, development of agricultural processing and marketing, and increasing producers' incomes.
