Land Dispute Over Cemetery Sparks Tensions in Bobo-Dioulasso

Bobo-Dioulasso:A land dispute concerning a cemetery has heightened tensions in the Dogona village-neighborhood of Bobo-Dioulasso's 3rd arrondissement. The conflict, involving the Konat family, traditional authorities, and local villagers, reignited following the execution of a court order that led to the partial demolition of the cemetery's fence.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the execution of the court order by a bailiff on September 15, 2026, resulted in public discontent and unrest. Laurent Kontogom, president of the special delegation (PDS) of Bobo-Dioulasso, reported that tensions escalated to the extent that a death occurred under unclear circumstances.

The court's decision authorized the destruction of the cemetery, which Alassane Konat claims is situated on land that has belonged to his family for generations. However, the village chief, His Majesty Fidèle Sanou, and other traditional leaders maintain that the land serves as a community burial site still in use.

Alassane Konat explained that his family had repeatedly sought intervention from administrative and judicial authorities to cease burials on the property. Despite these efforts, new graves continued to be dug, prompting the family to legally pursue the demolition of the cemetery fence.

Bakari Sanou, a village elder, confirmed that the land dispute has persisted for several years and extends beyond the cemetery issue. He noted that the fence was erected to protect the burial ground and its demolition has exacerbated community tensions.

In response to the situation, Laurent Kontogom announced that municipal authorities are actively engaging in dialogue with all parties involved to promote a peaceful resolution. He emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation and maintaining social cohesion.

Security forces remain present at the site to ensure public order and prevent further incidents as all involved parties express a desire to resolve the dispute without confrontation.
