Ambassadors Encouraged to Promote Biodigesters for Rural Development

Ouagadougou:The Alliance for Biodigesters in West and Central Africa (AB.AOC) convened a high-level meeting on Friday with ambassadors accredited to Burkina Faso. The event aimed to enlist their support in advocating for the use of biodigesters in member countries. The focus was on integrating these technologies into energy, agricultural, and climate policies to aid the sustainable development of rural regions.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the meeting sought to raise awareness among diplomatic representatives about biodigester technology, encouraging them to promote its adoption within their respective countries and through the partnerships they facilitate.

Minister Delegate for Regional Cooperation, Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré, praised the initiative as part of a broader effort towards sub-regional and African cooperation, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and shared solutions. She highlighted the role of biodigesters in reconstruction and local development, particularly in areas affected by insecurity. Kabré/Kaboré called for increased support from technical and financial partners and the private sector to advance this technology.

Biodigesters convert organic matter into biogas, which can be used for cooking and electricity generation, thereby reducing reliance on wood and charcoal. The technology also produces organic fertilizers that enhance soil fertility and agricultural productivity. The minister noted the potential benefits for women and girls who traditionally gather firewood, as well as health improvements from reduced smoke exposure.

Burkina Faso, hosting about 17,000 biodigesters and subsidizing their installation, plays a crucial role in the Alliance. Malik Gaye, chairman of AB.AOC's board, emphasized the collective efforts to promote biodigesters in eight West and Central African countries, highlighting a Netherlands-supported program benefiting Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Benin.

Gaye stated that the engagement with ambassadors would strengthen experience exchange and foster new partnerships. A joint declaration and roadmap are anticipated to solidify diplomatic commitments to promoting biodigester technology.
