Rome Honors President Thomas Sankara with Tribute Days

Rome:The Ministry of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism of Burkina Faso, in collaboration with its embassy in Italy, is organizing a series of events from October 23 to 25, 2026, in honor of President Thomas Sankara. These events will prominently feature the official inauguration of a park named after the leader of the August 1983 Revolution.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the tribute days are under the patronage of Minister Pingdwende Gilbert Ouedraogo. The aim is to honor the father of the Burkinabe Revolution and to express appreciation to the Italian government and people for their efforts in promoting Thomas Sankara's legacy.

In a recent message dated October 15, 2026, Captain Ibrahim Traore, President of Faso, conveyed the gratitude of the Burkinabe people to Rome's third arrondissement for their impending tribute to Captain Thomas Sankara.

Rome has contributed to these efforts by naming a central park after the former head of state. "Parco Thomas Sankara," located on Via Ugo della Seta, is anticipated to enhance Burkina Faso's image in Italy and throughout Europe. The Burkina Faso embassy in Italy highlighted these expectations in a statement.

The park's opening ceremony is set for Saturday, October 24, at 1000 a.m. The event will feature the unveiling of a statue of President Sankara, the inauguration of an exhibition, and the international launch of the "My Brick for Sankara" campaign.

A range of activities including conferences, film screenings, and artistic and cultural performances are planned. Additionally, the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial (CIM-TS) will establish its focal point in Italy during the occasion.

The events will see participation from the Burkinabe diaspora, representatives from member countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and friends of Burkina Faso.
