Niamey:The government of the Republic of Niger has strongly denounced an airstrike carried out by a drone from Chadian territory, supported by France, which occurred on October 24, 2026, in the Emiloulou area of the Agadez region. The strike resulted in the deaths of two civilians, injuries, and damage to vehicles, as reported on national television on October 26, 2026.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Niger's government condemned this act of aggression, labeling it a blatant violation of national sovereignty, Article 2, paragraph 4, of the Charter of the United Nations, and the founding principles of the African Union.
Investigations by Nigerien defense and security forces, along with judicial authorities, have determined the origin of the strike based on consistent evidence. This evidence is set to be transmitted to international bodies. Niger accuses Chad of engaging in hostile actions against it, providing support to mercenaries attacking Nigerien populations and strategic infrastructure.
The Nigerien authorities assert that foreign powers are backing these destabilization efforts and demand public statements from the involved states. They plan to summon the Chadian ambassador to issue a protest, take the matter to the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council, and call for an independent international investigation.
Niger is holding Chad accountable for the incident and demands an end to hostile actions and reparations for damages. The government emphasizes it is not seeking confrontation but warns against perceiving its restraint as weakness, reserving the right to defend its interests under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The Nigerien government urges the international community to condemn the aggression and calls on its citizens to remain calm and united in support of defense and security forces.
