High Commissioner of Ganzourgou Province Hosts Meeting on Sovereignty League Formation

Zorgho:The High Commissioner of Ganzourgou Province, Aminata Sorgho/Gouba, presided over a meeting in Zorgho to discuss the formation of the new Sovereignty League. The meeting, held on Wednesday, focused on distributing clubs, hiring technical staff, and choosing players to represent various regions.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the meeting included Presidents of special delegations, provincial directors, heads of services, customary authorities, and young athletes. The High Commissioner detailed the procedures for forming teams for this national football competition.

The Sovereignty League will feature 20 teams from Burkina Faso's 17 regions. Kadiogo will be represented by three teams, Guiriko by two, and the other 15 regions by one team each. The teams will be split into two leagues, located in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, with the Oubri region joining the Ouagadougou league.

Each team will comprise 30 players aged 16 and above. Recruitment for technical staff will be conducted through a call for applications, and the Oubri region has already issued a press release regarding this. The technical staff will then define the player selection strategy for their regions.

Participants were informed about the need to identify a logo, team colors, jersey design, and mascot, with proposals made on-site reflecting regional symbols. Concerns were raised about player selection, particularly for students, and the age limit for technical staff members.

The Sovereignty League is part of the Presidential Initiative for the Succession and Promotion of Elite Sport (IP-RELIS), aimed at enhancing high-level competition, promoting local talent, and fostering national cohesion. The Council of Ministers approved this competition on October 8, 2026, and it was presented by Burkina Faso's President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, on October 12. The pilot phase is planned from January to June 2027.
