Ouagadougou Lawyer Faces Potential Prison Sentence for Alleged Defamation

Ouagadougou:The prosecution has requested a sentence of 24 months in prison and a fine of two million CFA francs against lawyer Ini Esther Doli, who is being prosecuted for alleged defamation against the municipal police of Ouagadougou. This case stems from the eviction of the Allah Ti Kouma maquis, an area known for prostitution.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the proceedings began after the municipality of Ouagadougou filed a complaint following two Facebook posts by Doli on August 15, 2026. In these posts, she allegedly suggested that former or current clients might be among those claiming to fight prostitution.

The special delegation of the municipality linked these comments to the eviction operation at the Allah Ti Kouma maquis, which was carried out on August 14, 2026, pursuant to a court decision. They argued that Doli's remarks damaged the honor and reputation of the municipal police officers involved in the operation.

In her defense, Doli denied that her comments were aimed at the municipal police, explaining that they were part of a broader discussion on the role of different actors in prostitution. The plaintiff requested that Doli remain in custody and sought a symbolic one franc in damages.

The defense has called for Doli's acquittal, arguing that there was no intent to harm and no definitive link between Doli's remarks and the municipal police. They stated that Doli had already deleted the posts and issued an apology letter to the municipality's special delegation.

The court is expected to deliver its verdict on November 25, 2026.
