Ouagadougou:The artisans of the Djôrô region are making a notable impression at the 18th edition of the Ouagadougou International Arts and Crafts Fair (SIAO) by highlighting the richness of their heritage. Their participation aims to attract new markets and foster lasting commercial partnerships through a diverse array of traditional and plant-based creations.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the products on display from Djôrô include baskets, bows, quivers, woven loincloths, jackets, and computer bags crafted from plant materials. Additionally, items such as honey, neem oil, and shea butter are featured prominently, showcasing the region's creativity and resourcefulness.
Visitors to the Djôrô stand have expressed admiration for the originality of the handcrafted items. One visitor noted the unique experience of seeing a full-size traditional bow up close for the first time. Kambou Sié, representing the Djôrô delegation, emphasized the cultural significance of some items, such as the bow and quiver, which are integral to the Lobi identity.
Kambou Sié also highlighted the importance of the fair as a networking platform, rather than just a marketplace for selling goods. He noted a high number of visitors but pointed out that their presence does not always lead to immediate purchases, as some wait for potential price reductions towards the end of the event. Competition, particularly in the woven fabric sector, poses additional challenges for the artisans.
Despite these challenges, the exhibitors from Djôrô remain optimistic about establishing professional connections that may lead to significant orders post-fair. They view SIAO as an opportunity to share experiences, enhance their skills, and expand their professional networks.
The 18th edition of SIAO is scheduled to run from October 30 to November 8, 2026, in Ouagadougou, centered around the theme "African crafts and industrialization what synergy for better organization and promotion of local products and cultural heritage."
