Burkina: The “gold pangers” claim their place

Gold panning is our whole life," says Fatimata Sawadogo, president of the Association of Women Gold Pans of Burkina Faso, as she shows off her sisters' expertise in the matter.

On the occasion of the second edition of the Artisan Miner's Day (JAM), the association of women gold washers of Burkina Faso presented its know-how.

Contrary to what one might think, gold panning is not just a profession reserved for men.

Women are also increasingly flocking to this sector.

Composed entirely of women, the association of women gold washers in Burkina Faso was created three years ago.

It intends to play its part in the socio-economic development of Burkina Faso.

"We are women and we have decided to embark on gold panning," said the president of the association, Fatimata Sawadogo said Lintie.

"Of course we are women but we have nothing to envy to men," she added.

According to Fatimata Sawadogo, although they are women, they are able to dig the holes and crush the aggregates.

Today, thanks to gold panning, these women claim to meet their needs.

“It's difficult, but we have managed to build houses and send our children to school. Gold panning is our whole life,” said Ms. Sawadogo.

Concerning the JAM, Lady Sawadogo wanted its sustainability because it is a framework that allows all actors to discuss the concerns of the sector, in order to find solutions.
