Burkina/agricultural campaign: 850 ha of land developed in the Centre-North

The regional directorate in charge of agriculture in the Center-North region carried out a field trip on Sunday, September 22, 2024, to observe the progress of the agricultural campaign.Agricultural technicians, army officials and the Prison Security Guard (GSP) visited the field of the artillery group of the 1st military region, the collective field of the Kaya Detention and Correctional Facility (MACK) and the rice plain summarily developed in Konéan for the benefit of host populations and IDPs.The Regional Director (DR) in charge of agriculture in the Centre-North, Igor Birba, said he was satisfied with the work done by the stakeholders, in the sense that the harvests are looking good.'We went out to follow the campaign and especially to appreciate the agricultural initiatives underway, namely the basic developments and the institutional fields,' explained Igor Birba.According to him, on the sites visited, the actors not only responded favorably to the initiative of the Head of State, Captain Ibra him Traoré, but also followed the advice of the technicians.'A total of 800 hectares (ha) have been developed with the support of agricultural services, namely free plowing, the free provision of seeds and fertilizers,' declared the DR Agriculture of the Centre-North.According to the head of the departmental service of agriculture, livestock and fisheries resources of Kaya, Boureima Kiéni, on the five hectares sown by the artillery group, a production of 3.2 tons of beans and 1.2 tons of cowpeas is expected.A satisfactory result for army officials. "We are employed in combat and we also cultivate. The products of the harvest will improve the quality of the fighters' meals," rejoiced Warrant Officer Charles Yaméogo.As for the Louda prison farm (Boussouma), the expected sorghum production is 4 tons of cereals for three hectares of land sown for a first experiment.'We took the initiative to make our farm operational with a view to supporting the highest authorities in the country to achieve food self-s ufficiency,' said the deputy director of MACK, Noufou Tarnagda.Beyond institutional initiatives, the regional directorate in charge of agriculture in the Centre-North has also carried out basic developments including the three-hectare rice plain in Dondollé (Kaya) operated by 150 people (IDPs and guests), mostly women. In the ripening phase, a production of more than 25 tonnes of rice is expected.In terms of grievances, producers have requested state support for off-season crops.
