Ouagadougou: Algeria has announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, citing a series of provocative and hostile actions by the UAE. This significant decision was made public by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement released on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the ministry emphasized that Algeria had exercised great restraint and responsibility in the face of escalating provocations. Despite numerous warnings and diplomatic efforts to address the issue, the ministry stated that the UAE continued to engage in actions that crossed the boundaries of acceptable conduct between sovereign states.
The deterioration of relations between Algeria and the UAE is attributed to disagreements over interference in internal affairs and regional security issues. The tensions have been brewing for some time, with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune highlighting in October 2025 that relations with one Gulf state were lagging compared to the positive developments with Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. He accused the UAE of attempting to destabilize Algeria.
In a further move signaling strained relations, Algeria took steps on February 7, 2026, to annul the air link agreement with the UAE, which had been in place since 2013.
