Barsalogho:Students at the Barsalogho departmental high school attended a conference on Thursday focused on educating them about responsible behaviors to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This event was organized by the Barsalogho health district as part of the National Reproductive Health Week (SNSR+).
According to Burkina Information Agency, the conference was themed "Pregnancy in schools how to prevent it and what are the consequences for girls and boys." It aimed to inform adolescents about sexuality and the impact of early pregnancies on their education and future prospects.
Safiatou Toé, the reproductive health officer for the Barsalogho health district, noted past observations where girls were hesitant to speak up in the presence of boys. The discussions were conducted by Ms. Toé, midwife Saïdou Ouédraogo, and midwives Pauline Ouédraogo and Marie Noël Sanou.
The facilitators emphasized abstinence as the primary method for preventing school pregnancies. They also specifically recommended the use of condoms during sexual activity to prevent pregnancies and reduce the risk of STIs and HIV. Safiatou Toé expressed the goal of informing young people, both girls and boys, to help them live a healthy and protected sexual life.
In addition to the awareness sessions, the health district provided healthcare services, including consultations and free STI treatments. The SNSR+, scheduled from October 26 to November 1, 2026, also focuses on raising awareness among women of childbearing age, promoting breastfeeding, preventing female cancers, and family planning.
