The Minister in charge of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé/Diallo stressed on Thursday that according to indicators, 88% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) wish to return to their places of origin. , as part of the reconquest of the national territory, initiated by the Burkinabè Transition.
“The indicators that we had today show that there are 88% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who wish to return to their places of origin”, declared the Minister in charge of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé / Diallo.
Ms. Somé, who was speaking Thursday in Ouagadougou during a government press briefing on the management of IDPs relating to the security context, said that only 11% of IDPs wish to remain in their host community and 1% want to go elsewhere.
According to her, the government is in phase with the IDPs in the dynamics of the reconquest of the national territory.
Ms. Nandy Somé explained that the authorities are in the process of assessing their needs so that the displaced can resettle peacefully in their respective localities.
“As part of the care of IDPs, we have favored rehousing by host families, but with the rainy season looming, this requires strengthening the capacities of families in tents and on this subject, we are in the process of an urgent acquisition of tents, because the need is huge at the moment,” she said.
The Minister noted that the State will strengthen food assistance by increasing and regular supplies of food, various equipment and nutritional products in areas with strong security challenges in the country.
On the subject of the return of IDPs, Mrs. Somé indicated that a new dynamic is observed in the progressive reconquest of the national territory by combat forces on the ground (FDS and VDP).
According to him, actions to collect and manage information relating to the return of IDPs have been undertaken to not only allow the implementation of planned removal and recovery activities but also to facilitate cross-analysis of their numbers.
“As of May 23, 2023, this counting system has made it possible to register 20,457 returned households, i.e. 125,227 people who have returned to their localities”, she added.
On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the Prime Minister, Me Apollinaire Joachimson Kyèlem de Tambèla, during his speech on the national situation, reported that nearly 125,000 IDPs have reached their respective localities.
