On the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly, which is being held in New York, in the United States, the head of Burkinabe diplomacy, Olivia Rouamba, and her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, discussed the strengthening of security and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The warming of relations of friendship and bilateral cooperation between Burkina Faso and the Russian Federation, relaunched in recent years, will continue and strengthen.

This is, at least, what emerged from the exchanges between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad, Olivia Rouamba, and her Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, at the end of an audience between these two personalities in New York, September 21, 2023.

According to the head of Burkinabe diplomacy, the exchanges between her and the head of Russian diplomacy focused on bilateral and multilateral cooperation between their two countries with a view to strengthen them.

She, in fact, noted that during the visit of the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, to Russia, on the occasion of the Russia-Africa forum, it was a question of consolidating relations between the two States.

“What emerged from our discussions was above all the question relating to the security and humanitarian aspect. And, soon, we will hold a Joint Commission to see how we will consolidate certain aspects of our cooperation,” said Olivia Rouamba, as she left the audience.

In addition to this, Burkina Faso intends to strengthen, with the Russian Federation, economic cooperation through the mobilization of Burkinabè businessmen.

“It is important to put in place a mechanism to allow our businessmen to be able to invest in both countries,” she indicated.

Olivia Rouamba also welcomed the upcoming opening of a Russian diplomatic representation in Burkina Faso which, according to her, should make relations between Moscow and Ouagadougou more dynamic.
