Burkina Faso Doctor Addresses Rising Concerns Over Male Infertility

Ouagadougou: The president of the Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Burkina Faso, Professor Charlemagne Oudraogo, has offered crucial advice to address the growing issue of male infertility, which he notes is on the rise.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Professor Oudraogo highlighted the declining sperm quality and the increasing rates of male infertility in a statement on his Facebook page. Despite the seriousness of the issue, Oudraogo pointed out the lack of discussion surrounding it and did not cite any specific studies or data to back up his claims.

A study conducted at the Yalgado Oudraogo University Hospital Center in Burkina Faso from January 2019 to December 2022 documented 310 cases of male infertility. While the numbers are concerning, Professor Oudraogo emphasized that male infertility can be addressed with suitable measures.

He advised men to avoid exposing their testicles to heat, suggesting that keeping them “free” at home or in bed can be beneficial. Professor Oudraogo identified several risk factors contributing to male infertility, including tobacco and alcohol use, a sedentary lifestyle, being overweight, chronic stress, and exposure to heat and endocrine disruptors.

To mitigate these risks, the professor recommended a lifestyle that incorporates a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, omega-3, and antioxidants, along with regular physical activity and quality sleep.
