Burkina Faso Launches 4th Edition of Heritage Month with Call for Greater Involvement in Cultural Preservation

Ouahigouya: Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo officially launched the 4th edition of Burkina Faso's Heritage Month on April 17, 2026. During the event, which took place at the Place de la Revolution in Ouahigouya, ambassadors for Heritage Month were named and installed, and Living Human Treasures from various regions received honorary distinctions.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the event is held under the patronage of the President of Faso, Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore, represented by Prime Minister Ouedraogo. The activities, which run from April 18 to May 18, 2026, revolve around the theme: "Heritage and cultural diversity: commitment, role and responsibilities of actors."

The event saw significant participation from the Yatenga region's populations and authorities. The ceremony included a welcome address by Lucien Amos Lankoande, the prefect and president of Ouahigouya's special delegation, followed by proclamations by the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Pingdwende Gilbert Ouedraogo, who announced five ambassadors for the Burkinab¨ Heritage Month.

The government spokesperson emphasized that Heritage Month coincides with the anniversary of the Popular Progressive Revolution, which is rooted in traditional values. Training workshops for heritage professions are planned to enhance young people's employability, and May 15 will be a special day dedicated to customs and traditions.

Prime Minister Ouedraogo read a message from the President of Faso, stressing that cultural heritage preservation is essential for asserting sovereignty and fostering unity. The Head of Government called on all stakeholders, including public institutions, local authorities, civil society, and youth and women's organizations, to engage actively in the planned activities.

The ceremony concluded with the installation of twenty-one Living Human Treasures from different regions, honored as officers and knights of the Order of the Stallion for their contributions to preserving and promoting cultural values.
