Reo:The second phase of the third edition of the National Days of Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation emphasizes the importance of consuming locally-produced Burkinabe goods.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the High Commission of Reo held a ceremony on Monday to launch this phase, bringing together the province's constituted bodies. The event featured a message from the President of Faso, urging Burkinabe citizens to reinforce their commitment to national production and consumption.
This phase, scheduled from October 2 to 16, 2026, is themed "Let's produce Burkinabe, let's consume Burkinabe" and carries the slogan "All for made in Burkina, let's make every purchase a purchase of sovereignty." The presidential message outlines economic sovereignty as dependent on producing, transforming, and consuming. A weakness in any of these areas compromises the entire chain and keeps the country reliant on external sources.
The message highlighted achievements in agriculture, noting over seven million tons of cereals produced and reaching one million tons of rice. It stressed the need to enhance local processing to better utilize Burkina Faso's resources. The President of Faso emphasized transitioning from selling raw materials to processing cotton, shea, sesame, mango, hides, skins, and livestock.
Consumption is identified as a critical challenge, with Burkinabe encouraged to choose local products when possible, especially in households, ceremonies, administrations, school canteens, and public markets. Traders, processors, artisans, and manufacturers are called upon to promote "Made in Burkina Faso" and combat fraud, smuggling, and stock hoarding which undermine economic sovereignty.
Women's roles as producers, processors, traders, and food tradition guardians are acknowledged, echoing Thomas Sankara's views on domestic consumption. The ceremony also addressed environmental protection, with the President urging tree planting and preservation, linking food sovereignty to land protection.
High Commissioner Talari Germaine Ouoba thanked attendees for their participation, urging citizens to demonstrate patriotism through daily actions by producing locally, processing more, and choosing Burkinabe products derived from national expertise.
