Burkina Faso Opens Doors to Artificial Intelligence in Cultural Industries

Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism in Burkina Faso inaugurated the 10th edition of the Days for the Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries (JPICC) on Friday. This 48-hour event is dedicated to exploring the future of the Burkinabe cultural sector amid evolving technological landscapes.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the event, themed “Burkinabe Cultural and Creative Industries in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Opportunities, and Adaptation Strategies,” aims to help cultural stakeholders leverage new technologies while maintaining national cultural identity. Attendees include cultural entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and young project leaders participating in conferences, panels, masterclasses, and B2B meetings.

Minister of Culture, Pingdwend© Gilbert Ou©draogo, highlighted the JPICC’s role over the past ten years as a forum for dialogue and capacity building, supporting cultural entrepreneurship. He stressed that artificial intelligence offers opportunities for transformation in artistic creation, audiovisual production, and market expansion, while also posing challenges such as copyright protection and the preservation of cultural sovereignty.

Minister Ou©draogo noted the risk of underrepresentation in future technologies if national cultural elements are not adequately documented and digitized. He asserted that while AI can enhance productivity and market access, it cannot replace the intrinsic creativity of artists.

Dr. Berlli Michel Jonas Som©, Secretary General of the Ministry of Digital Transition, Posts and Electronic Communications, supported the initiative, emphasizing digital technology as a key driver for developing the cultural sector. He outlined plans to create an inclusive and innovative digital ecosystem through skill development and improved access to technology.

During the workshop, participants will discuss AI’s impact on cultural sectors, adaptation strategies, and potential partnerships to accelerate digital transformation within the industry. The Minister of Communication urged cultural entrepreneurs to utilize these discussions to foster innovation and drive the development of Burkina Faso’s cultural and creative industries.
