Ouagadougou: The President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, has urged the traditional chieftaincy to disengage from political activities, focusing instead on its foundational duties of social regulation and value transmission. In a discussion with journalists, he emphasized the importance of refocusing on endogenous values and strengthening social cohesion.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Captain Traore highlighted that the recent enactment of the "Faso bu kaoore" law reflects the government's intention to remove traditional chieftaincy from political involvement. The aim is to reestablish their role in managing conflicts through indigenous mechanisms.
Captain Traore pointed out that traditional structures possess the capability to resolve social disputes effectively, ranging from minor thefts to more significant offenses. He noted that not every issue in society needs to be addressed by modern judicial systems, underlining the importance of traditional justice spaces in fostering community support and solidarity.
Furthermore, the President underscored the significance of traditional leaders in imparting cultural values to the younger generations. He called on traditional chiefs to educate the youth about indigenous values and historical societal functioning in Burkina Faso.
Captain Traore also stressed the necessity of reconciling tradition with modernity. He believes that the traditional chieftaincy has a crucial role in reviving ancient societal structures while contributing to modern development, thereby bridging existing gaps.
Despite acknowledging the challenges in this endeavor, Captain Traore expressed confidence in the capability of customary authorities to address these challenges, given the momentum of the ongoing reforms.
