Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Engages with UN Leaders on Security and Climate

New York:Burkina Faso's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traor, held meetings on September 28 and 29, 2026, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Diene Keita. The discussions focused on security, climate challenges, and strengthening the partnership between the UN and Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Minister Traor's meeting with Antonio Guterres involved discussions on the security and climate challenges facing Burkina Faso, as well as the partnership between the country and the UN. Guterres emphasized that the UN's action program in Burkina Faso is defined by the government and aligns with national priorities.

Guterres also highlighted Africa's significance in future UN actions, addressing the need to correct injustices faced by the continent. He mentioned issues such as African representation on the Security Council, the unsustainability of debt, and inadequate funding for climate adaptation.

Minister Traor acknowledged the UN's role in Burkina Faso, expressing his appreciation for Guterres' leadership over the past decade. He also criticized "truncated" narratives about the Sahel's situation, noting that the Confederation of Sahel States has better identified the challenges, which he claims are being used as foreign policy tools by some states.

On September 29, Traor met with Diene Keita at the UNFPA headquarters. Keita affirmed UNFPA's commitment to working closely with Burkina Faso to meet population needs and praised the country's efforts in managing population issues. She announced plans to visit Burkina Faso to better understand the situation and enhance the agency's support for government initiatives.

Minister Traor expressed gratitude for the UNFPA's impact in Burkina Faso and assured that national authorities are ready to strengthen their partnership with the agency.
