Traditional Chief’s Representative Urges Cautious Harvest Management Amid Delayed Rains

Kourittenga:The representative of the customary chief of Baskour, Corneille Nadembega, has called on local producers to carefully manage their expected harvests this season to ensure household food needs are sustainably met. Nadembega emphasized the importance of preserving part of the harvest due to the late arrival of rains, which delayed fieldwork.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the delay in the arrival of rains meant that sowing did not begin until late July and early August, which shortened the growing season for crops. Nadembega noted that this delay has had repercussions on crop development, particularly affecting maize yields, and warned that if the rains cease prematurely, farmers might not have sufficient harvests to meet their needs.

Nadembega highlighted the challenges faced with maize and millet, indicating potential yield issues if the rains do not continue. The situation coincides with the Burkinabe authorities' focus on monitoring the 2026-2027 agropastoral campaign and the conditions faced by farmers. In response to these uncertainties, some producers have diversified their crops, opting for beans and other shorter-cycle crops to ensure some level of harvest.

The representative urged producers to manage their harvests wisely and avoid selling a large portion immediately after harvest. He stressed the importance of keeping enough food to cover basic household needs. Nadembega also commended the Burkinabe government's efforts to support agricultural production and food sovereignty, urging continued vigilance and good management of resources to address potential future food challenges.
