Ouagadougou: The Minister of Agriculture, Commander Isma«l Sombi©, has issued a stern warning regarding the rehabilitation work on the Bama plain, declaring that "not a single second of delay in the rehabilitation of the Bama plain will be tolerated" by the government during the project's launch.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Minister emphasized that farmers have ceased their activities on the Bama plain for the dry season to facilitate the rehabilitation process. Consequently, the companies tasked with executing the work are expected to adhere strictly to the project timelines.

Commander Sombi© further insisted that contractors publicly commit to completing the rehabilitation within the agreed deadlines. The extensive project includes the modernization of 1,260 hectares of irrigated land and 70 hectares designated for market gardening.

The project entails rebuilding 63 kilometers of primary, secondary, and tertiary supply canals, rehabilitating the internal drainage network, and constructing 85 kilometers of guard ditches within an eight-month period, specifically outside the rainy season.

This integrated project also involves constructing eight storage warehouses with a capacity of 250 tons each, featuring a lifespan of 100 years, and eight autonomous water stations. The project, costing over 865 million FCFA, aims to benefit the farmers affected by the rehabilitation work.

The Bama plain rehabilitation is part of a broader initiative under the Agro-pastoral and fisheries Offensive for food sovereignty in Burkina. This initiative plans to develop 10,000 hectares of irrigated land and 30,000 hectares of lowlands from 2023 to 2025.
