Ouagadougou:The Burkinabe mining and energy sector has significantly contributed to the state's budget, generating over 2,450 billion FCFA between 2022 and 2026. The Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, Yacouba Zabré Gouba, reported a historic peak of more than 980 billion FCFA in revenue during the 2025 fiscal year.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the minister highlighted a contribution of 145 billion FCFA from the mining sector to the Patriotic Support Fund over the period of 2024-2025.
The report also emphasized the adoption of the 2024 Mining Code and the establishment of the National Society of Precious Substances, which enabled a substantial increase in gold collection from 450 kg to over 42 tonnes by 2025. Additionally, the Burkina Faso Mining Investment Company now manages seven mining projects, with plans to increase this number in the medium term. The state has acquired the Boungou and Wahgnion mines and taken over the Perkoa deposit.
Local content and on-site processing have seen significant growth, with purchases from local suppliers by mining companies rising from 350 billion FCFA in 2022 to more than 960 billion FCFA in 2025. The commissioning of the Golden Hand plant for mining waste treatment and the creation of national refineries support this advancement.
In the quarrying sub-sector, there are currently 40 quarries in production for aggregate supply, alongside the establishment of over thirty cooperatives for artisanal mining supervision.
The energy sector has experienced a 62% increase in installed capacity, from 501 MW to over 812 MW in four years. This growth is supported by the construction of more than 1,800 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 4,300 km of distribution lines, with rural electrification rates improving from under 6% in 2022 to nearly 12% currently.
Looking ahead, the ministry plans to operationalize the Komsilga and Donsin power plants by 2026 and inject an additional 300 MW into the national electricity grid by 2027.
