Catholic Faithful in Koupla Celebrate Assumption with Renewed Hope and Prayer

Kourittenga: The Catholic faithful of Koupla celebrated the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with a solemn mass at the Notre-Dame-des-GrSces Cathedral, presided over by Father Bienvenu Zinaba. The occasion was marked by a deep sense of faith and hope as the community gathered to honor this significant event in the Catholic calendar.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the homily delivered by Father Zinaba was based on the Gospel according to Saint Luke, focusing on the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. The biblical narrative describes Mary's visit, where Elizabeth, upon hearing Mary's greeting, felt the baby leap in her womb and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth's exclamation highlighted the blessedness of Mary and her child, a central theme of the day's celebration.

The congregation at Notre-Dame-des-GrSces Cathedral used this opportunity to renew their faith and offer prayers for peace in Burkina Faso. A member of the faithful, Batrice Kiema, expressed gratitude for the day, stating, "We want to give thanks to God and Mother Mary for this beautiful day. We ask for health and peace for our families and for all of Burkina Faso."

Father Zinaba took the time to explain the theological distinction between the Ascension of Christ and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. He clarified that while Christ ascended to heaven, the Virgin Mary's elevation was an act of God, emphasizing the unique nature of this event in the Christian faith.

He also reminded the congregation that faith extends beyond prayer, urging them to express their beliefs through actions such as love, solidarity, and the pursuit of peace. "The liturgical texts today recommend that we must fight. We must trust in the Lord," he stated.

Father Zinaba highlighted the Virgin Mary as a model of hope, encouraging Christians to follow her example. "The Virgin Mary opened the path of hope," he urged, calling on the faithful to seek her guidance in their earthly journey.

The celebration also included baptisms, adding to the day's significance and joy for the community.
