Gourma: 120 tonnes of corn from SONAGESS at a social price for the benefit of the population

A mobile sales operation of 120 tonnes of corn from the National Society for the Management of Food Security Stocks (SONAGESS) at a social price began on October 12, 2023, in the city of Yendabli for the benefit of the population.

The Eastern region is one of the localities most affected by the terrorist hydra. This situation has led to a massive displacement of populations in distress towards more secure areas.

To help Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable host populations, the Burkinabe government carried out an operation to sell 120 tonnes of corn, mainly made up of 50 kg bags at a social price, in the town of Fada NGourma.

This operation concerns three sites: the land in sector 6 north, the land in Brazil and the market in sector 2 of Fada NGourma.

Each person can only benefit from one bag on presentation of the Burkinabé identity card or exceptionally the family card. The price of the bag is set at 6,000 CFA francs.

According to the project manager, Support for the management of SONAGESS intervention stock, Jacob Ouédraogo, this initiative of the Burkinabe government is part of the response plan against food insecurity in the country.

The secretary general of the Gourma province, at the head of a delegation, Yaya Koné went to encourage the SONAGESS agents and see the working conditions on the various sales sites.

According to Issa Tirogo, one of the residents of the town of Fada NGourma, this sales operation will relieve vulnerable populations because a 50 kg bag of corn costs 32,000 FCFA in the market place.

“For several years, it is only IDPs who have benefited from aid while the populations languish in poverty,” he said.
