Bourasso:Farmers in the Bourasso commune are grappling with a severe threat to their crops as grain-eating birds ravage fields across several villages including Bourasso, Sikoro, Kamiankoro, and Kodougou. Following a challenging agricultural season characterized by unfavorable rainfall patterns, this new menace is further jeopardizing the prospects for a successful harvest.
According to Burkina Information Agency, these birds are predominantly targeting millet crops, attacking them before they reach maturity. This has exacerbated the difficulties faced by local producers, who are already struggling due to the inadequate rainfall. The situation has prompted many farmers to spend considerable time in the fields in an effort to safeguard their crops.
This ongoing crisis is raising significant concern among rural communities, with fears of substantial crop losses and the potential impact on household food security. Joel Coulibaly, a producer in Kamiankoro, reported that one hectare of his millet has already been ravaged by these birds, a situation common among many producers in the village. "This worries us, because we fear famine," he stated.
In Sikoro, Blaise Traoré, a producer and Volunteer for the Defence of the Homeland, lamented the need to harvest crops prematurely to mitigate losses, which ultimately compromises the quality of the harvest. In response to these challenges, farmers in the Bourasso commune are urgently calling on authorities to implement measures to control the bird population and protect agricultural yields.
