Guiriko Authorities Encourage Massive Tree Planting on National Tree Day

Guiriko: Administrative and environmental authorities in the Guiriko region launched the National Tree Day (JNA) this Saturday, under the theme “My Concession, My Tree.” The ceremony was marked by the symbolic planting of saplings by the region’s governor, Mariama Konate/Gnanou. Presiding over the event, Governor Konate/Gnanou emphasized that the initiative aligns with the vision of President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, who has called for a nationwide effort to mobilize Burkinabe citizens for massive tree planting.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Governor Mariama Konate/Gnanou stated, “The people of Burkina Faso are called upon to plant millions of trees in one hour today. The theme ‘My concession, my tree’ invites every citizen to take ownership of this action.” She also urged participants to register their plantations on a dedicated national platform, which will allow authorities to monitor the progress and results of this extensive reforestation campaign.

The regional director of Water and Forests of Guiriko, Comrade Colonel Hassime Rabo, highlighted the day’s significance as an opportunity to remind citizens of the critical role trees play in environmental preservation. “This is a special day to invite citizens to take a special look at environmental protection. We encourage everyone to plant at least one tree, in accordance with this year’s theme,” he remarked. Colonel Rabo advised the population to choose tree species that provide shade, fruit, or medicinal benefits, and those contributing to the beautification of their surroundings.

Reviewing the outcomes of the previous campaign, Colonel Rabo revealed that more than 1,012,000 plants had been planted in the region by 2025, with maintenance and protection efforts leading to a survival rate of between 60 and 80%. Beyond planting, authorities underscored the importance of maintaining and protecting the seedlings to ensure their growth, preserve vegetation cover, and contribute sustainably to improving living conditions and combating environmental degradation.
