Ouagadougou: Iron Biby organizes the 1st edition of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) called “The Patriotic Awakening”: Six-time Burkinabe world champion Cheick Ahmed Al-Hassan Sanou, known as Iron Biby, successfully hosted an inaugural mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Friday, August 21, 2026, in Bobo-Dioulasso. The event, titled “The Patriotic Awakening,” featured amateur fights that brought together fighters from Burkina Faso and Cameroon.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this large-scale event was a significant milestone for the Burkinabe sports community, offering a platform for young fighters to showcase their skills and promote MMA in Burkina Faso. Iron Biby expressed his motivations, saying, “I’m doing this for my country. Before, we only saw MMA on TV, today we’ve done it in Burkina Faso.” He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the development goals advocated by Burkinabe authorities.

Iron Biby highlighted that the event responds to a call from the authorities, particularly Captain Ibrahim Traor, who encouraged citizens to contribute to the country’s development through their respective fields. “We have joined the same movement and we will continue to do our best for the well-being of our youth,” he stated, underscoring the broader impact of the event on the community.

The event was attended by Seydou Kabor, the regional director of Sports, Youth, and Employment for Guiriko, who praised the performances. “We witnessed some truly excellent fights. This is a new sport for us in Burkina Faso, but we were amazed all evening. Congratulations to Iron Biby and congratulations to all the athletes,” he remarked.

In addition to the sporting displays, the evening was marked by gestures of encouragement towards the athletes. All participating fighters received cash prizes ranging from 75,000 to 225,000 CFA francs, based on their performances, as a token of appreciation and to motivate further engagement in the sport.

Through “The Patriotic Awakening,” Iron Biby aims to popularize MMA in Burkina Faso and provide young practitioners with opportunities for expression and growth in this emerging discipline.
