Lo:The National Police initiated the enforcement phase of the mandatory helmet law in Lo on Thursday, October 1, 2026. On the first day, enforcement teams, positioned along key routes in the city, impounded 135 vehicles that failed to comply with the new regulations.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this operation signifies the commencement of the Ministry of Security's directive, which concludes the period of administrative tolerance and awareness campaigns. Among the impounded vehicles, 124 were two-wheeled and 11 were three-wheeled.
Idrissa Sawadogo, the Central Police Commissioner of Lo, highlighted that this move towards stricter enforcement follows a substantial educational effort. "We initiated an awareness campaign some time ago, including Operation 'Head Shield,' where over 600 individuals were apprehended," he stated, emphasizing the humane intention behind the checks. The Commissioner added, "Our primary goal is not punitive but to save lives, as head injuries are often the most severe in traffic accidents."
In light of ongoing risky behaviors, the Commissioner urged road users to adhere to safety regulations. He stressed, "Helmets are not meant to hang from the handlebars; they should be worn on the head."
Modeste Yamogo, one of the individuals stopped during the operation, expressed understanding of the police's actions, acknowledging the importance of the government's decision. "Wearing a helmet is crucial for public safety. These checks aim to protect us since even minor accidents can result in severe injuries without a helmet," he said, encouraging others to comply for their own protection.
