Balav©: A mask-wearing ceremony was organized in Balav© on Sunday, July 5, 2026, to implore the spirits of the ancestors for peace, security, and good rainfall in the locality.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the event brought together village elders, traditional leaders, administrative authorities, and the residents of the Balav© commune. This ritual of presenting masks marks the beginning of the initiation of a new generation of young men entering adulthood.

This tradition is passed down from generation to generation, as explained by Baro Coulibaly, representative of the traditional chief. It is an event that takes place every five years. Coulibaly indicated that this practice is a heritage bequeathed by the ancestors, and each mask present at the ceremony represents a family in the village.

After the masks enter the village, alms of animals and red dolo are made in favor of the ancestors to implore good rainfall, peace, security, and social cohesion between the daughters and sons of the village. This also entrusts the conduct of the initiation ceremony of the new generation to the ancestors.

The day following the arrival of the masks is a major celebration for the inhabitants. On this occasion, a mask dance ceremony takes place in the public square, much to the delight of the spectators.

To conclude the ceremony, the masked figures parade around the village to the sound of drums and cries of joy, while imploring blessings and protection for the village.
