Kouana:Producers and residents in the rural commune of Kona were recently informed about measures to tackle dry season challenges, lowland development, pesticide use, and climate-resilient farming techniques. This awareness initiative was part of a meeting led by Ali Sanou, President of the special delegation of the commune of Kona.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the meeting was spearheaded by Joachim Gnoumou, head of the departmental agricultural service, with the aim of guiding rural stakeholders towards new agricultural strategies that can enhance local production and food sovereignty.
Joachim Gnoumou discussed the national program aimed at constructing 750 boreholes with adequate flow to support agricultural activities during the dry season. This initiative is intended to reduce dependence on rainfall and improve access to water for irrigation. He outlined the criteria for obtaining subsidized boreholes, with applications opened since October 12, 2026.
Another focal point was the development of local lowlands, which can optimize water resource use, enhance arable land, and improve soil fertility. These improvements are expected to boost local production of cereals and vegetables.
Gnoumou also highlighted the importance of using approved pesticides, adhering to recommended dosages, and following safety measures during treatments to protect producer and consumer health and maintain soil quality. He advocated for climate-smart farming techniques, such as the za technique, mulching, and crop rotation, to preserve soil health and manage climate risks more effectively.
Producers were also encouraged to utilize Android mobile phones for weather forecasts to better adapt their agricultural practices to changing climatic conditions.
Ali Sanou commended the community's involvement and urged stakeholders to implement the advice given to sustainably enhance their production. The president of the Kouana Village Development Council expressed gratitude towards the municipal authorities, encouraging producers to apply the recommendations for strengthening agricultural resilience and food security in the area.
