Ouagadougou: The Sourou Provincial Directorate of Water and Forests, in collaboration with the Tougan Association of Traditional Healers, organized a reforestation day on Saturday, August 22, 2026, to strengthen the town’s medicinal grove located on the Kassan road. A total of 165 seedlings, mostly medicinal, were planted during the event.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the initiative aims to reinforce a medicinal grove established in 2025 for the town of Tougan. The Provincial Directorate, working alongside traditional healers, facilitated this reforestation activity to bolster this important ecological and medicinal site.

The provincial director of water and forests, Mto Malo, stated, “We have planted 165 plants, mostly medicinal, to reinforce what we started last year.” He explained that the plants would enhance the grove’s vegetation cover and ensure a steady availability of plant species crucial for traditional treatments.

Mto Malo emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging local residents to take ownership of the grove and care for the newly planted seedlings to preserve the space for future generations.

El-Hadji Adama Dao, president of the traditional practitioners of Tougan, highlighted the significance of the planted species in traditional medicine. He noted that some of the species are nearing extinction, and this initiative will help protect and preserve them for medicinal purposes. Dao also called for increased community mobilization in future years to continue strengthening the medicinal grove for the community’s benefit.
