Ouagadougou: The Technical Committee on Food Security advocates for securing major agricultural basins. Gathering Friday in Bogand© for the first ordinary session of the year of the Technical Committee of the Provincial Council for Food Security (CT-CPSA), stakeholders in food security in the Gnagna region assessed the food and nutrition situation in the province. They called for urgent measures, particularly securing the main agricultural production areas, to preserve the livelihoods of the population and strengthen food sovereignty.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the work, held in the meeting room of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries Resources, allowed participants to examine the progress of the 2026 wet agricultural campaign, the nutritional situation of households as well as the interventions of technical services and partners. Placed under the theme "Endogenous solutions to security, humanitarian and climate challenges in the Goulmou, Sirba and Tapoa regions in a dynamic of food sovereignty", the session highlighted the many challenges that continue to affect the agricultural, pastoral and nutritional sectors.
The reports presented noted that the rainy season arrived late and irregular rainfall was observed, leading to pockets of drought. Despite these constraints, the producers carried out the essential farming operations, including sowing, plowing, and spreading organic fertilizer. Participants also noted the efforts made by the State and its partners to support producers. More than 142 tons of seeds have been mobilized, of which nearly half have already been distributed. Fertilizers, livestock feed, and breeding kits containing sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry have also been given to several hundred beneficiaries in the communes of Bogand©, Bilanga, and Pi©la.
The provincial director of Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Ibrahima Sangar©, encouraged producers to continue field work, believing that the weather forecast remains favorable for a good agricultural campaign despite the delay observed in the arrival of the rains. However, discussions highlighted a situation characterized by a slowdown in commercial activities, difficulties in supplying markets due to the context, a decline in vegetable and non-timber forest product production, as well as a resurgence in livestock theft and kidnapping, which further weakens household livelihoods.
During a visit to the province, the regional director of Agriculture, Water and Animal and Fisheries Resources, Mand© Bachirou, praised the commitment of rural stakeholders and urged them to intensify awareness-raising activities for the benefit of producers. The Committee also welcomed the support of humanitarian partners, including CONASUR, the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Burkina Faso Red Cross, and several faith-based organizations that continue to distribute food to vulnerable households.
At the end of the work, several recommendations were formulated. Participants particularly stressed the need to strengthen security in key agricultural production areas, including the Dakiri site in the commune of Manni, considered one of the most important agricultural granaries in the province, as well as the main ONEA borehole located in Gori, in sector 3 of Bogand©. According to them, the gradual reconquest of these spaces is an essential prerequisite for the sustainable revival of agricultural production and the strengthening of food security in Gnagna. The Committee also recommended the establishment of a health cluster at the provincial level, the development of a harmonized framework for monitoring the interventions of technical services, the organization of awareness radio broadcasts, and regular monitoring of the implementation of the recommendations from the session.
