Ouagadougou: The U17 girls' Stallions of Burkina Faso emerged victorious against the Amazons of Benin, securing a 3-1 win at the August 4 Stadium in Ouagadougou. This match marked the first leg of the preliminary rounds for their category in the World Cup.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Burkina Faso U17 team displayed an aggressive start, with Rihanata Sana scoring the opening goal in the 4th minute. The team's momentum continued, as they doubled their lead just 10 minutes later. Twend Germina Micaya Simpor ensured the team's dominance by scoring the third goal in the 20th minute, effectively sealing the match's outcome in the first half.
In the second half, Benin's team intensified their efforts, applying significant pressure on Burkina Faso. Romaine Gandonou, a key player for Benin, managed to win and convert a penalty in the 71st minute. Despite the pressure, Burkina Faso's defense held strong, maintaining their lead until the match concluded. Avocevou Sena Vitowanou of Benin received two yellow cards, leading to her expulsion towards the end of the game.
Coach Idah Azonsou of the U17 Cheetahs expressed concerns over the team's initial timidity and the impact of the red card. He remains optimistic, noting that the away goal provides Benin an opportunity in the second leg. Burkina Faso's coach, Ousmane Coulibaly, emphasized the need for further goals in the return leg to secure qualification.
The second leg is slated for Friday, April 17, at the Kgu Stadium in Lom, Togo, as Benin lacks a certified stadium.
