Ziniare Police Prioritize Education Over Enforcement in Helmet Awareness Campaign

Ziniare: On Monday at the traffic lights in Zagbega, Ziniare, the national police traded their whistles for enforcement in favor of education. For one morning, motorcyclists were stopped not to pay fines, but to be made aware of a stark reality: without a helmet, even the shortest journey can become a tragedy. A look inside an operation where, for now, prevention is better than punishment.

According to Burkina Information Agency, at 9:25 a.m. on January 19, 2026, a national police pickup truck arrived at National Route 3's southern entrance to Ziniare. Police officers and Auxiliary Security Volunteers (VADS) quickly exited the vehicle, prepared to conduct an operation focused on raising awareness about helmet use among motorcyclists.

The officers, positioned on either side of the road, stopped motorcyclists and directed them to park. The operation was conducted with respect and focus, emphasizing education over penalties. Motorcyclists lined up, providing their details as officers recorded names and information. Many riders expressed surprise and offered various excuses for not wearing helmets.

Tenwende Consimbo, one of the motorcyclists, mentioned that wearing a helmet made him drowsy, while Hermann Djimido, a mason's assistant, initially resisted but eventually complied. Moustapha Zoungrana and another motorcyclist, Ibrahim, provided personal reasons for not wearing helmets, such as forgetfulness and urgent circumstances.

As the operation concluded at 10:50 a.m., over a hundred motorcyclists had been stopped. Police Lieutenant Norbert Kambou addressed them, explaining that the operation followed instructions from the Ministry of Security. He highlighted accident statistics from 2025, noting 375 recorded accidents, 341 injuries, and 13 fatalities, often due to head trauma.

The awareness session included showing photos of serious accidents, which visibly impacted the crowd. Lieutenant Kambou emphasized that future operations would transition to enforcement for repeat offenders. The message resonated with the motorcyclists, who acknowledged the importance of helmet use.

This educational initiative served as a reminder of the importance of helmet safety, aiming to protect lives and preserve families in Burkina Faso.
