Zondoma Authorities Explore Kindibo’s UNESCO Heritage Site

Zondoma: Under the leadership of the High Commissioner of the Zondoma province, Aboubacar Sidiki Nabe, the directors and heads of department visited the blast furnaces of Kindibo, an ancient metallurgical site classified as a UNESCO heritage site, on May 15, 2025.

According to Burkina Information Agency, as part of Burkinabe Heritage Month, which was established by the Burkina government, the High Commissioner of Zondoma Province invited local authorities to explore the local tourist attractions. To set an example, provincial authorities embarked on an outing to the ancient metallurgical site in the village of Kindibo, located in the commune of Tougo, about 20 kilometers from Gourcy.

The main attraction of this site is the blast furnaces, which demonstrate the iron industry skills of the former inhabitants of the locality, known as masters of fire and iron. Guided by Ylassa Kindo, visitors had the opportunity to view not only the furnaces but also the iron ore extraction quarries.

The site, which spans several hectares, has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Provincial director in charge of culture, Kassoum Sawadogo, expressed hopes that measures will be taken to safeguard this heritage.

During the visit, the High Commissioner and his team met with the guardians of the site. The guardians demonstrated their skills as part of the celebration of the day of customs and traditions. Besides the blast furnaces, the province boasts many other tourist sites, including the Birigui Julien Ouedraogo Museum, the Naaba Baongo Grove, the Naaba Yadega Mausoleum, and the Naaba Warma Square. The third edition of Burkinabe Heritage Month is scheduled from April 18 to May 18, 2025, under the theme "cultural heritage and economic development."
